Our Mission:
The New Haven Bike Collective strives to help promote bicycles as a fun, safe, and accessible form of transportation in the Elm City and beyond. We are a volunteer-driven, not-for-profit organization that believes in bicycling as an effective and sustainable way to build a cleaner, healthier, and safer society. Our primary goals are to salvage and resurrect unwanted bikes, and offer them to our community through our earn-a-bike program. We provide a welcoming space to learn about safely building, maintaining, and riding bicycles. We are committed to being anti-racist, anti-sexist, class-conscious, as well as queer and gender-inclusive, and aim to actively oppose all forms of oppression. The New Haven Bike Collective endeavors to empower our community with the knowledge, skills, and tools needed to transform New Haven into a premier bicycle-friendly city.

Brief History:
In the winter of 2007, the New Haven Bike Collective was formed to address the growing need for affordable bikes in New Havenand to use the abandoned bikes left by Yale students for the residents of New Haven. Since 2008, over 100 bikes have beenfixed up and repaired, donating them to community groups including: Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services, Centro SanJose Community Center, Farnham Neighborhood House, Chabaso Bakery, High School in the Community, and many walk-involunteers. We received a start up grant from New England Grassroots Environment Fund, and support and stipend employment from Dwight Hall at Yale.

We are always accepting donations of bikes, bike parts, labor, non-perishable food, and expertise.

So, should we utilize this to communicate about a vision for the NHBC?

colinthegreat Meeting Notes: Wednesday December 19, 2007 0 Dec 24 2007, 11:02 PM EST by colinthegreat
Thread started: Dec 24 2007, 11:02 PM EST  Watch
Folks: Kanga, Calmen, Diana, Kale, Marty, Colin, Tiffany, Paul

Vision: Working group did not meet, nothing to report.

Space: Working group did not meet, nothing to report. Discussion: Paul says he might be able to find a space (other than Angelo’s) but also says that $500 a month is reasonable. Kale says that Jason might be able to find a space at Yale for free. Colin says that he feels that we could negotiate a price lower than $500 from Angelo. Colin also says that he will take pictures of Angelo’s space to share with the group (attached). There are a lot of questions we still need to answer about the space: How much will utilities cost? What about insurance (in terms of people getting hurt)? What about liability (in terms of people suing)? Paul suggests we contact Barbara Lindsay (a local lawyer) about legal issues. Colin says that we need a space as soon as possible, at least temporarily, so that we can get the bikes.

Materials: Group met and reports that we need the following items: stands, tubes, helmets, tires, space heater, fan, file cabinets, tools, and helmets. Kale says that she has come across ‘homemade’ stands with tool cabinets attached and suggests that we do the same. Paul says that several bike shops in the area have closed over the past several years and may have materials to donate. Kale has a list of places we can ask for resources. Yale has bikes to donate.

Bikes: Need to be picked up as soon as possible.

Other stuff: Matt from Devil’s Gear has offered to teach a repair workshop but is worried about getting sued. Kanga says her friend, Matt from New Jersey, could also teach the workshop (and wouldn’t worry about getting sued). Paul says his non-profit has many similar goals and may be able to help, including letting us use his non-profit status. Kale thinks we need to decide whether or not we are going to seek 501(c)3 status.

Next meeting: Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008, 7pm, location to be determined
